Crude Oil Basics

Crude Oil Basics

  • Three types of oil:
    • Animal
    • Vegetable
    • Mineral
  • The first two are fats that tend to break down under heat. Mineral oils are the most complex, and are least affected by heat.
  • The effect of heat on oil is important due to engines and machines producing heat during operation. This is why anima and vegetable oils are not the main components in industrial lubricants. They may be used as additives.
  • Mineral oils contain hydrocarbons, the raw material used for fuels and lubricants.
  • Mineral oils are known as CRUDE OIL STOCKMineral oil occurs naturally. It is removed from the ground and shipped to the refinery for processing.

Generally speaking, crude oil can be classified into three types of crude oil stock

  • Paraffins
  • Naphthenes
  • Mixed-Base: A mixture of paraffins and Naphthenes
