Fractional Distillation

Have you ever wondered how finished products are created from crude oil? The process is called fractional distillation and produces gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, motor oil, and even asphalt and natural gas.

• Used to separate components of complex mixtures such as crude oil.

• Crude oil is heated to about 650°F+

• Once heated it is brought into the bottom of a distillation column

• As vapors rise in the column they cool and condense at different levels or “cuts”
